It was a unique weekend that marked the end of the 2023 season. Adverse weather conditions and a challenging track to interpret posed challenges for Mattia Volpi and Jacopo Hosciuc as they did their best to wrap up their season.
Thursday and Friday’s free practice and testing sessions were canceled due to strong winds, making it impossible to follow the original program. The focus of Massimiliano Morlacchi’s team shifted to Saturday, a crucial day for the only race scheduled. Unfortunately, Jacopo Hosciuc experienced a fall during free practice, and he was declared “unfit to race,” which unfortunately prevented the number 6 rider from continuing the weekend.
All eyes then turned to Mattia Volpi, especially with the absence of Niccolò Antonelli. Mattia made the most of the free practice and qualifying sessions, securing a 12th-place start for the only race on the program.
Sunday afternoon officially marked the conclusion of the Team MMR’s 2023 season. Volpi’s start was not perfect, but he managed to regain a race pace similar to that of the front runners. Unfortunately, an error after the initial laps forced Mattia to retire prematurely after a long excursion into the gravel. It was a shame, especially considering the significant progress made from the beginning to the end of 2023.
Massimiliano Morlacchi, the team owner, said, “It’s a real shame to close the season like this, especially because before the error, Mattia was going very fast and would have certainly made a recovery, as the stopwatch shows. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with his determination and his season. I extend the same appreciation to Jacopo, in his second race with us after an excellent debut, unfortunate on Saturday but quick to adapt to the new bike; we wish him a speedy recovery. I also thank and congratulate Niccolò, absent in Valencia but a standout throughout the season, especially in qualifying and with the first podium with our team. I thank all the boys and girls for their hard work, the riders, our technical partners, and our sponsors who have always supported us. See you in 2024.”
